What an RNG does
A random number generator (RNG) produces a new, unpredictable result for every round. It has no memory. A coin that has landed heads five times is still 50/50 on the sixth flip, and a game that has not paid for an hour is not “due”.
What return to player means
Return to player (RTP) is the share of all money staked that a game returns to players over a very large number of rounds. An RTP of 96% means that across millions of rounds, 96 units come back for every 100 staked. The remaining 4% is the house edge.
It is a long-run average, not a promise
In one session, you can be far above or far below the RTP. The figure describes the crowd over time, not your evening.
An example with numbers
Imagine a simple three-reel game with six symbols. There are 216 possible outcomes. Six of them show three matching symbols, and ninety show exactly one pair. If three of a kind pays 25 times the stake and a pair pays half the stake, the theoretical return is about 90.3%, so the house keeps about 9.7%. Our educational simulator uses exactly this model with virtual credits so you can watch the figure emerge.
| Spins | What you will see | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | Anything: big gain or loss | Sample is too small to show the average |
| 1,000 | Swings, trending towards the edge | Law of large numbers starts to show |
| 100,000 | Close to the theoretical return | Variance averages out; the edge remains |
Common misunderstandings
- Hot and cold machines. Past results do not change future odds in an RNG game.
- Systems and patterns. No betting pattern changes the house edge in a fair game.
- Near misses. Two matching symbols and a third just off the line feel meaningful, but they are ordinary outcomes.
How fairness is checked
Regulated operators are normally required to use games tested by independent laboratories. Ask for the testing body and certificate rather than trusting a badge image on a page. Unlicensed sites cannot offer that assurance.
Conclusion
RNG means no memory, RTP means long-run average, and house edge means an expected cost. If you want help turning that into a budget, read how to set limits.
Frequently asked questions
Can a game be “due” to pay out?
Not when it uses a proper RNG. Each round is independent of the last one.
What is a good RTP?
Higher is better for the player, but no regulated game returns 100%. The house edge always exists.
Are the results in your simulator real?
No. It is an educational demo with virtual credits and has no connection to any operator or real result.
